I'm currently in New York performing with the festival Art in Odd Places. October 1-10th, on 14th St.
I am wearing perfume, and walking up and down 14th street in Manhattan, along with many other artists, influencing our surroundings through art for the next 10 days. Personally, I am experimenting with the anatomy of smell, and the invisible character of its use in art. Through this performance in New York, I am influencing the molecular chemistry of my environment, the minds of passers by, and creating memory. Smell’s relationship to graffiti and architecture is being exploited through its ability to invade, and create structure, such as the formation of a barrier. As far as Ritual is concerned, I have a walking routine each day for 4 hours, wearing a new perfume, collecting language through recordings, readings, and eavesdropping. At the end of each day I will create a prayer, inspired by the link between prayer, perfume, and poetry in literature, derived from these collections, which will title that day’s fragrance. This will be repeated with 9 perfumes.
